Learn about the common complications of root canal therapy and how to prevent them.

Have you had a root canal at another office but are still feeling the pain? It might be time to visit Dr. Mazhar Butt in Carbondale, to examine whether complications have arisen from this typically simple and safe procedure. If you just had a root canal and are noticing some issues with your smile Root Canalduring your recovery, these problems could be to blame:

  • A crack in the tooth root that wasn’t found during your treatment
  • Having more than one root canal performed on a single tooth
  • A defective dental crown, which can cause bacteria to enter the tooth and reinfect it
  • Problems with the inner sealing that can also allow bacteria to enter the inside of the tooth (this usually occurs over time)

In these cases, another root canal will be necessary in order to preserve the tooth. While retreatment is rare (it only occurs in about 5 percent of root canal cases), it can still happen. If we find that the tissue surrounding the root canal is still infected after your treatment, then the procedure is believed to have failed. Common symptoms of a failed root canal include swollen, painful and tender gums around the treated tooth.

When these symptoms arise we will run X-rays to determine whether the root canal didn’t work. If we deem the treatment unsuccessful, this means we will need to perform another procedure. During this procedure we will make an incision into the gums, then remove the infected tissue, and even the end of the tooth’s root if it is also infected. Retreatment after a failed root canal can still be very successful, and the majority of patients don’t experience any further problems.

The best thing you can do when you notice a dental issue is to call your Carbondale dentist right away. It’s always better to be safe rather than sorry. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms after your root canal, call Dr. Mazhar Butt to get it done right this time!
