What is a Dental Veneer?

A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain (about half a millimeter), that covers the front-facing surface of your tooth (or teeth) to improve the aesthetic appearance and coloration. They can be extended to fill gaps, cover chips and mask wear as well, making them an excellent choice to rejuvenate your smile and fix all your cosmetic concerns with a single treatment. The porcelain is stain-resistant and can last for up to 10 years before needing replacement. Unlike crowns, veneers are not meant to repair decayed teeth- they are primarily an aesthetic treatment.

What Does the Application Procedure Involve?

Due to recent improvements in the technology, the procedure can be very simple. In many cases, the veneers are cemented directly onto the tooth surface. Sometimes, to ensure proper adhesion, a thin layer of enamel must be removed and ‘sanded’ lightly to roughen the surface for better bonding, prior to taking the mold. Once you have discussed your choices and goals with your dentist, molds are taken of your teeth and sent to have your veneers custom manufactured. You may have temporary veneers applied during this period between appointments if necessary. When the veneers are ready, you return for a second appointment at which the veneers are cemented on to the teeth. A follow-up appointment is often a good idea to make sure the gums and teeth remain healthy, and ensure your satisfaction.

A Completely Personalized Solution

Veneers can be designed to bring your smile back to look the way it used to, or you can create an entirely new one! As veneers are a very flexible cosmetic solution, make sure you consider what you want to change and communicate it to your dentist.
